Been having problems with making a DVD with Windows Live Movie Maker 2011?

Windows Live Movie Maker is a free offering from Microsoft that offers novice and average users the ability to edit video and from there, be able to share/publish it to Facebook, YouTube, eMail, DVD and even custom resolutions. It's a basic editor with very simplified interface, and it's part of the Windows Live Essentials Suite of applications.

The program itself isn't bad; it's very basic- after a few months of using it, I found some problems with it and had to move on to something more capable. But for the basic quick stuff it's okay…

As I visit the forums from time to time, it seem to be a reoccuring issue where people/users can't create a DVD with Windows Live Movie Maker. Well, to be honest, Windows Live Movie Maker doesn't make the DVD's… the only thing Windows Live Movie Maker can do [technically] is export a WMV.

In an effort to clarify the process of how a DVD is created from Windows Live Movie Maker; I offer this…
» Windows Live Movie Maker has no DVD authoring functions at all; none.

     1. Windows Live Movie Maker is a video editing software package, it takes in the video clips and
audio, and allows you to compose them in a specific way [as a project].
     2. Windows Live Movie Maker only exports video as WMV; not directly to DVD format [VOB].
     3. Once the video is exported to WMV, in a temp location, the WMV is converted again, to VOB format
     by Windows DVD Maker.
     4. Windows DVD Maker controls the chapters, looping, authoring and BURNING of the DVD.

Explaining that, you can understand Windows Live Movie Maker has nothing to do with the actual DVD burning…

And what I have found from the forums and from my own issues is that Windows DVD Maker will crash on you as it's converting or burning the DVD; I believe it has some flawed logic in it somewhere and Microsoft just doesn't care enough anymore to fix it.

So, what to do?

You need another DVD authoring tool to burn your WMV file; luckily there's options, but I have one I have found that works good if you're having issues or you are trying to troubleshoot your issue…

Download WinX DVD - DVD Authoring software…

This is an alternative DVD authoring software package for converting your videos directly to VOB, to be placed on a DVD disc. It offers functions for Standard quality and HD quality, it has functions to control the DVD menu and chapter controls… and it's without charge of any kind —  that means FREE.

All you're doing here is exporting a high res version of your movie to a WMV file and then burning that WMV file with WinX DVD Author… Personally, I haven't had it fail yet.

But it's a outstanding way to break in the burning process. Is it Windows DVD Maker, or is it the WMV file? If it burns fine with WinX DVD; it's a problem with Windows DVD Maker.

I hope this helps...
